Our Ketamine Treatment for Pittsburgh Patients

The Good Drop treats numerous patients from Pittsburgh and nearby suburbs at our Avoca clinic. That’s because our patient population sees the effectiveness of IV ketamine and Spravato ketamine nasal spray for rapidly treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, and so much more.

We call IV ketamine infusions the gold standard for treating depression and other mental health disorders.

Ketamine interacts with the brain’s N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors to block pain and mood signals that are normally sent out to the body. This is how ketamine helps us to regulate our mood while easing chronic pain.

At the same time, ketamine encourages the brain to create proteins that create new pathways between neurons. Those pathways can help you to think differently about things and begin to change your life. The brain’s ability to change itself is called neuroplasticity.

All of this together makes IV ketamine an effective and fast-acting solution to mental health disorders and pain for many people.

The Good Drop also offers the groundbreaking nasal spray form of ketamine called Spravato.

The Food and Drug Administration approved Spravato as a mental health treatment in 2019, but only in conjunction with an oral antidepressant. In 2025, the FDA approved it as a monotherapy, meaning patients can now have their Spravato therapy covered by insurance whether they take an oral antidepressant or not.

Spravato is particularly effective against treatment-resistant depression and major depressive disorder. We’re thrilled to offer Spravato to Pittsburgh residents at our Avoca clinic!

What Is Ketamine Therapy Like at the Good Drop?

Whether you’re interested in IV ketamine, Spravato, or both, our care team at The Good Drop provides our patients with a quality experience every time. Here’s what you can expect with us:

  1. We set up a phone call between you and our staff physician, Dr. Russell E. James II. You can discuss your medical history, ask questions, and see if ketamine treatment is a good fit for you (it is for most people!).
  2. If ketamine is a solution for you, we schedule your first appointment at our clinic in Avoca, PA.
  3. You can choose from our six treatment rooms at each of your sessions. Each room has different colors and artwork that are designed to evoke unique moods.
  4. We dim the lights and play calming music so you can focus on your treatment.
  5. IV ketamine infusions take about 45 to 60 minutes. You might feel detached and introspective while infusing. Dizziness and nausea are possible afterward but usually short-lived.
  6. Spravato may last up to two hours. It creates less dissociation than IV ketamine but more body relaxation. You might feel a little unsteady afterwards, but this fades relatively quickly.
  7. Our attentive nurses are always available during your session to provide anything you need.
